Lee Clow At Ground Zero of California Cool: Think Different

DJMG: not just a purveyor of feet-tapping beats, but a published author as well. Excellent piece by an even more excellent human being.

Animal Kingdom

After just missing it in theaters, I watched Animal Kingdom last night. Despite the fact that I cried twice and had to pause it and ask questions, I liked it. I should have anticipated the violence, but I was surprised by the up close shots of people dying. That being said, my chief critique is that the most attractive actor dies early.

Black Swan

Because I like creepy movies, I was really looking forward to seeing Black Swan. If I had read any of the reviews (LAT, NYer, etc.) my enthusiasm would have been tampered. Even though I don't think it stands up as a masterpiece of the medium (that bar is high), I liked watching it. The film moved quickly, was nice to look at, and remained suspenseful until the end when some of the imagery became overblown and a little silly.

Discussion questions: Was Winona Ryder happy to play her role or did she cry inside and wear this heinous outfit to the premiere as a result?

Is Vincent Kassel attractive or repulsive?

Is Sebastian Stan still dating Leighton Meister, and if not, is he still interested in brunettes??

Hey Girl

I recently rediscovered this gem.

I find Ryan Gosling attractive, but also creepy, like he has an opium problem?

On a related note, I tried to buy those shoes. They look better on him.

Mad Men Beards in New York Magazine

I am really enjoying this slideshow of actors on Mad Men with off-season beards.

John Slattery, please call me sometime.

The glaring exception of the group is Vincent Kartheiser (who plays Pete Campbell). He looks like Macauley Culkin in a k hole.

He also appears to be on his way to old lesbian status.

A Single Man

Last night I saw A Single Man (after a very strong martini and very garlicky hummus at Westside Tavern). I liked it much more than I thought I would. Unsurprisingly, it is very stylish and nice to look at; surprisingly (to me), it moved right along and wasn't too opaque or allegorical or boring. At 99 minutes long, it is my ideal movie length (a key reason why I rarely go to the movies).

One particularly enjoyable aspect of this film is that everyone is so attractive. In particular, there are many handsome young men in this film. The most off-the-charts smoldering is Jon Kortajarena (he is 24 years old, dear Lord).

And the sad sack from About a Boy is all grows up (his name is Nicholas Hoult)!

I think a few scenes were shot at Chez Jay (my dad parked cars there in the 60s, and will gladly tell you about it).

Then I watched the last episode of Conan and cried.
