Boozecats!!??!?!!?
Thanks Laura for sending me this interview with the creator of Boozecats. I need a kitty internet business plan. Moustaches haven't panned out so far.
Tune Yards, Buena Vista Social Club, Goldfrapp
On Sunday I went to the Hollywood Bowl to see this line up (thank you MG for the tickets).
Tune Yards are wacky in many ways: punctuation and capitalization, hairstyles, guitar sizing. I only caught a couple of their songs; I liked them, and Sunlight seems to be the most accessible.
Buena Vista Social Club was what I expected given my extremely limited knowledge of their music, Cuba, and old people in suits. The female vocalist Omara Portuondo is an inspiration to women everywhere, as she is still getting after it at the ripe age of 80.
Goldfrapp was more glittery than I anticipated. Her set was like a UFO from the future got stuck in 1983, studied David Bowie, then landed in 2010 to show us what it looks like to combine outer space, the future, and glam disco rock. There aren't any great live clips up, but watching this video for Alive gives you an idea of what Goldfrapp is about right now: part sexy, part silly, part camp, lots of lycra.
Goldfrapp has a lot of avid fans; I was impressed at the level of dance enthusiasm (read: many drunk gay men). I remained seated for most of the show; it was easier to eat my caramel popcorn that way.

Goodbye Marty Ginsburg
RIP. If you want to be inspired and saddened at the same time, please take a look at this illustrated essay on visiting the SCOTUS and Ginsburg in particular.
Related: Did you know that Akin Gump has (or sponsors?) a SCOTUS blog? There is an item about who the real "activist judges" are; I haven't read the whole thing yet, but I hope it gives me a reason to stop hating Clarence Thomas so much.
Still Related: When Thomas bails I guess I can start hating Alito more.

Participants often regurgitate on each other.
This is the type of behavior I expect from Lakers fans.

CATIOS
Thank you Mike. I know a few kitties who would appreciate a catio. And I know a lady who will help you determine if your cat is among them:

(10:02:34 AM): Even indoors, a cat enclosure can be a boon, said Carole C. Wilbourn, a cat therapist in Manhattan who recommends them to clients struggling with what she calls “inter-cat hostility.”
(10:02:36 AM): found my calling
(10:02:38 AM): bye standard time
(10:02:43 AM): i will be a kitty therapist

Sharrows blowing up
This blog has a lot of good info about biking in LA, and news about the installation (application?) or Sharrow signage on Fountain in Hollywood.
I still am unable to figure out how to easily cross La Cienega on a bike. Somebody throw down some Sharrows!
Please let me know if you would be interested in a trade for fine art?

Tough crowd
Some people bring a knife to a gun fight; others bring a knife to an a capella singing competition.

LCD Soundsystem Friday June 4 2010 at Hollywood Palladium
This show was so much fun! I danced and sweat and ran into a lot of friends and even my boss. My memories of seeing LCD previously (at the Avalon in 2006 and at Coachella in 2007) are a little hazy, so I wasn't sure what to expect.
Crowd energy was good, sound was decent (I didn't use earplugs the whole time, which means that a lot of people probably found the sound to be lacking), and the Palladium ceiling is no longer caving in; on the whole, it was a great time, despite having to miss DJMG at the Mandrake. The internet says this is James Murphy's last tour as/with LCD Soundsystem, and I am glad I was there for a piece of it.
Holy Ghost as opener was good. Nice to hear their live set.
Complaints: line for drinks was unconscionable, and I didn't get to hear So You Wanted a Hit or Dance Yrself Clean.
Elsewhere in town, Local Natives were at the Troubadour that night:
Ina Garten
I know there are a lot of Ina Garten fans out there. I have never watched her show, but perused a couple of her books the other night. Key takeaway: most recipes called for "one cup good quality mayonnaise."
One recipe without any mayo is lemon fusilli with arugula and cherry tomatoes (I did not use broccoli like the online version calls for, and used whole milk instead of heavy cream(!)). It was easy and tasty. I would make it again. You could easily add chicken if that is your thing.
I also made this nice easy summer dessert which was not as good as the first time I made it. Next time, swap mascarpone for the ricotta?
Next up while avocados are still good: guacamole salad. Or, just guacamole. Or both!

Violent felons wearing body armor pose a dangerous threat to our communities
What about violent felons not wearing body armor? No threat? Great news.

They said their J. Crew bathing suits last forever
One day I hope to be able to spend $410 on a bathing suit, but until then I will be paying under $15 a piece at H&M. I do not buy the argument in this NYT piece that selling bikinis as separates drives up the retail price by 20%.
Arson fires in Venice
Decent info in the YoVenice! threads here and here.
And if arson bores you, maybe you will be interested in a 70-person street brawl.
